Prevention Tips

This Really Happened

A family was traveling out of state when their car broke down. Their 6-year-old daughter drank some antifreeze, thinking it was Gatorade®. The child's father called 1-800-222-1222, the nation-wide number for Poison Control from his cell phone. Poison Control connected him to the local 911 dispatcher for ambulance transport to the nearest hospital and contacted the emergency room with treatment advice. The child was observed in the emergency room for several hours. Fortunately, her lab studies were normal and showed that she must have spit out most of the antifreeze. (Otherwise, she would have required hospital admission and received the antidote to prevent kidney damage or death.)
