Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that is poisonous to dogs. It is found in gum, candy, baked goods and toothpaste. Although well-tolerated in humans, xylitol stimulates insulin release in dogs, causing profoundly low blood sugar. If left untreated, dogs may develop seizures or collapse.
