Call this number 24 hours a day to talk to a poison specialist. Call right away if you have a poison emergency. You can also use this number if you have a question about a poison or about poison prevention. There is a single telephone number for Poison Control, but there is still a network of 55 Poison Centers around the country. When you call you will talk to your local poison control specialists.

How does it work?

When you call 1-800-222-1222, you are automatically connected to the Poison Center that serves your area. Your call is routed based on the area code and exchange of the phone you call from - or for cell phones, sometimes based on your location.

If you call 1-800-222-1222 from a cell phone, you will reach Poison Control. Depending on your cell phone carrier, you might reach the Poison Center that serves your phone's area code and exchange or the Poison Center that serves your phone's current location. Either Poison Center can help you. If you need local assistance, the Poison Center you reach will coordinate with the other Center to help you get the care and information you need.
