Medical Toxicology Fellowship
Conferences
Daily Clinical Case rounds will be 1-2 hour conferences including a review
of all the cases from the previous 24 hours as well as interesting follow-up
on other cases. Rotating residents, medical students, and Fellows are
required to attend this conference.
The
weekly Fellows’ Conference will sequentially teach the clinical
manifestations, differential diagnosis, and management of poisoned
patients. The Fellows’ conference will be coordinated by the Poison Center
Clinical Toxicologist and the Toxicology Fellows. The Fellows will
sequentially present all of the Core Content Topics to other Fellows and
rotating medical students and residents. One or more attendings will be
present to participate in discussion. Attendance is required. [The “Core
Content for Medical Toxicology”was most recently published in February 2004
(Wax, Ford, Bond et. al. The core content of medical toxicology. Ann Emerg
Med 2004;43:209-214;

Review of these topics will be included in all the case-based discussions
and at the weekly and monthly toxicology conferences as well as during
bedside case management.
Both the Pediatric Emergency Medicine (EM) Fellows and the Pediatric ICU
Fellows have weekly meetings. The Fellows may participate in all these
meetings every week (optional), but are required to attend to discuss
or present pediatric toxicology cases once a month, alternating between ICU
and EM.
The
Toxicology Journal Club is a scheduled opportunity to discuss recent
articles of interest and sentinel articles in toxicology. These meeting will
be attended by our research faculty (Drs. Litovitz and Watson).
Following this meeting there will be time set aside to review the Fellows’
progress on research projects. Attendance is required.
Toxicology Grand Rounds will be a monthly meeting held at GWUMC (the primary
institution) at a location that would be accessible to the majority of our
consultants. Cases of interest from the previous month will be presented.
Our toxicology consultants and residents from subspecialty services
will be encouraged to attend, especially when involved in the care of the
patients presented. The Toxicology Fellows will be
present short didactic lectures based on each case.
During the one month rotation at GWUMC, the fellows will attend teaching
rounds and journal club at the Hyperbaric Center for two weeks. They will
participate in teaching patient rounds with nephrology, with a particular
emphasis on familiarity with extracorporeal methods of decontamination. One
week of this month will be spent working with the Pathology Department,
focusing on the pathologic manifestation of toxic cell injury and attending
conferences.
The
weekly Fellows’ Basic Science Conference (Text: Casarett & Doull’s The
Basic Science of Poisons) will specifically cover the biochemical basis
of metabolic processes and the toxicity and interactions of therapeutic
drugs during “Mechanisms of Toxicity”, and pharmacology and
pharmacokinetics during “Absorption, Distribution, and Excretion of
Toxicants”, “Biotransformation of Xenobiotics” and “Toxicokinetics”.
Teratogenesis is covered during “Genetic Toxicology” and “Development
Toxicology”.
