Medical Toxicology Fellowship

The George Washington University Medical Center (GW)

Fellows will spend one month at GW during their first year, focusing on hyperbaric medicine, pathology and nephrology. During this month, fellows will be based in the GW Hyperbaric Medicine Department.  There will be didactic sessions, required reading, journal club, consulting rounds, hands-on clinical experience at GW's monoplace unit.

Hyperbaric Medicine

For two weeks, the fellow will attend teaching rounds at the Hyperbaric Center, with particular emphasis on:

  • current theories relating to cellular hypoxia from toxic causes;
  • indications and contraindications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy;
  • logistical challenges to instituting hyperbaric oxygen therapy;
  • risks and benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for toxic exposures;
  • evaluation of outcomes of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Pathology/DC Medical Examiner’s Office

Fellows will spend one week in the Department of Pathology at GW working with the pathology Fellows focusing on the pathologic manifestation of toxic cell injury, with a focus on gross and microscopic manifestations of toxic exposures; forensic laboratory procedures used to evaluate mortality related to toxic exposures; and the legal elements required to document mortality related to toxic exposures. Fellows will also visit the D.C. Medical Examiners Office with their pathology resident mentor.  They will participate in conferences and be responsible for one presentation during the month.

 Nephrology Service

For one week, the fellow will participate in patient teaching rounds on the Nephrology Service, with a particular emphasis on extracorporeal methods of decontamination and the renal toxicity of selected drugs and chemicals.  During this month fellows will be expected to become familiar with extracorporeal methods of decontamination and participate in conferences and be involved in urgent dialysis procedures.
